📖 Het Nieuwsartikel (Vereenvoudigd)
🇧🇪 In België gaan 31 verdachten vrijuit.

🇧🇪 Cultural Context
Did You Know?
This story is about more than one drug case. It shows how justice works in Belgium and the Netherlands. Here is why it matters for you as a learner and as an expat.
- 📌 A trial within a reasonable time: Belgium and the Netherlands both signed the European Convention on Human Rights. Article 6 of that convention says every person has the right to a fair trial “within a reasonable time”. In Belgium, the law lets a judge give a LOWER sentence when a case takes too long. Letting 31 suspects go free with no punishment at all is very rare, and that is why this case made the news.
- 📌 Two countries, similar words: Both countries have an Openbaar Ministerie (Public Prosecution Service). Belgium also has the federaal parket, the federal prosecutor’s office. It handles big cases that cross borders, like organised crime and terrorism. In Belgium you will also hear the word parket for the local prosecutor’s office.
- 📌 Why “John H.”? Dutch and Belgian media usually write a suspect’s first name and only the first letter of the last name. This protects privacy, even for people with earlier convictions. You will see this style in almost every Dutch crime story.
- 📌 The border region: Lommel is a town in the Belgian province of Limburg, close to the Dutch border. According to Europol and the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA), Belgium and the Netherlands are major centres for the production of synthetic drugs like ecstasy (XTC) and amphetamine. Criminal groups often use normal-looking companies to order the chemicals they need.
- 📌 Exam tip: For the Dutch Civic Integration Exam (inburgeringsexamen), the part called KNM (Knowledge of Dutch Society) often asks about the rule of law (de rechtsstaat). Remember: judges are independent, the OM decides who goes to court, and you can always go to hoger beroep (appeal).
✅ Antwoorden (Answers)
Translation of the News into English
In Belgium, 31 suspects go free. That means they get no punishment. It is about a large trial about drugs. The trial took far too long.
One of the suspects is John H. He comes from the Netherlands. He is a well-known drug criminal. Judges convicted him several times in recent years.
The acts are from ten years ago. According to the judge, nobody worked on the case file for long periods. There was no good reason for that. In total, it added up to more than five years.
The court also says the case file is not very difficult. The suspects also did nothing to make the trial longer.
This is a very exceptional decision. It almost never happens. Does a trial take too long? Then a court usually chooses a sentence reduction. The suspects then get a lower sentence.
160 years in prison: The Public Prosecution Service (OM) demanded heavy sentences. Together, it came to more than 160 years in prison. For John H., the OM demanded eighteen years in prison. That eighteen years already included a reduction, because the trial took too long.
The OM also wanted to seize 14 million euros. According to the OM, H. is one of the leaders of a criminal organisation. The group traded chemicals. You can make synthetic drugs with those chemicals. The group ordered many ingredients through a soap factory in Lommel. Lommel is a town in Belgium, close to the Netherlands.
What happens now? The federal prosecutor’s office does not agree with the decision. It is going to appeal. Then another judge will look at the case again.
