๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ Culturele Context (Cultural Context)

Did You Know?

๐Ÿ“Œ What is a plofkraak? A plofkraak is an ATM raid. Criminals blow up a cash machine with explosives and steal the money. Dutch banks closed many ATMs and added systems that glue or stain the banknotes, so raids inside the Netherlands became much harder. German police (the Bundeskriminalamt) report that many ATM blast suspects in Germany come from the Netherlands. Here is why a raid in Germany can end with a car crash in Amsterdam.

๐Ÿ“Œ Politie, recherche or marechaussee? The Netherlands has several police services. The politie is the regular national police. The recherche is the detective branch of the police, and it handles criminal investigations. The Koninklijke Marechaussee (Royal Netherlands Marechaussee) is a military police force. It guards the borders, so you meet its officers at passport control at Schiphol Airport.

๐Ÿ“Œ Amsterdam’s districts: Amsterdam is divided into stadsdelen (city districts), such as Centrum, Noord, Zuid and Nieuw-West. Nieuw-West lies on the west side of the city and is one of its largest districts.

๐Ÿ“Œ How to contact the police: Call 112 in an emergency. Call 0900-8844 when there is no emergency. You can share information anonymously through Meld Misdaad Anoniem on 0800-7000. These numbers often appear in the KNM part (Knowledge of Dutch Society) of the civic integration exam.

๐Ÿ“Œ Vocabulary tip: Dutch news reports often say aanhouden (to detain, to arrest) instead of arresteren. De politie heeft twee mannen aangehouden means the police have arrested two men. In everyday speech you also hear oppakken, as in de politie pakte hem op.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Translation of the News into English

The police have arrested two men. The men are 25 and 36 years old. They both live in Amsterdam. The news is about a car full of explosives.

At the end of July there was an ATM raid in Germany during the night. In an ATM raid, people blow up a cash machine. They want the money. After that, the police started a chase.

The car crashed in the Nierkerkestraat. That street is in the city district of Nieuw-West. There might have been explosives in the car. That is very dangerous. Everyone within 100 metres of the car had to leave. Later the police knew for sure: there really were explosives in the car.

Three men were in the car. After the accident they ran away. An arrest team of the police entered houses in the neighbourhood. But the team found nobody.

At the end of September the police arrested the first suspect. Last Tuesday the police arrested the second suspect at his home. Both men are now in custody, NH Nieuws reports. The police do not say what exactly the men did. In August the Royal Military Police also arrested a third suspect at Schiphol. That person is free again now.

Explosives in a city are very dangerous. They are a danger to everyone in the neighbourhood. That is why this investigation is important for Amsterdam.

The investigation is not finished yet. The detectives are still looking for a suspect. Were you a witness? Or do you have camera footage? Then call the police and come forward!
