🕵️ Wat is er gebeurd?
Er is groot nieuws over spionnen en een iPhone 📱. De Amerikaanse journalist Matthew Cole schrijft een nieuw boek. Hij schrijft dat de Nederlandse MIVD vanaf 2018 kon meekijken in de telefoon van Jared Kushner. Kushner is de schoonzoon van de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump.
De MIVD is de inlichtingendienst van het Nederlandse leger. De dienst werkt vaak in het geheim. Kushner is ook de onderhandelaar van Trump. Hij praat over de oorlogen in Oekraïne, Gaza en Iran.
Het Amerikaanse tijdschrift Vanity Fair laat een stuk uit het boek zien. Zo weten we nu wat Cole schrijft.
📱 Hoe kwam de MIVD in de telefoon?
Volgens Cole zit het zo. In 2017 pakte de Britse politie een Russische hacker op. Nederland vroeg dat aan de Britten. De man werkte voor de Russische inlichtingendienst GROe.
De hacker kreeg een KEUZE. Hij kon werken voor de Nederlandse overheid. Anders ging hij misschien jaren naar de gevangenis. Hij koos voor Nederland.
Op een computer in de Russische stad Rostov vonden de Nederlanders foto’s van het scherm van Kushners iPhone. Begin 2018 kwam de MIVD zelf in de telefoon. Zo zagen de spionnen alles op het scherm.
💰 750 miljoen dollar
De spionnen zagen iets bijzonders. Kushner keek op een bankrekening in Dubai. Op die bankrekening stond 750 MILJOEN dollar. Het geld kwam via een bank in Azerbeidzjan.
Cole schrijft dat het geld van de koninklijke families van Saudi-Arabië en de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten (VAE) kwam. Volgens Cole ontving Kushner dus vele miljoenen. Het geld was voor politieke doelen in het Midden-Oosten. Kushner en de president van de VAE hadden samen controle over de bankrekening.
Een bron vertelt aan Cole: “Jared was op zoek naar een omweg.” Kushner wilde betere contacten tussen Israël en Arabische landen. Dan kunnen de landen meer handel doen.
🗣️ Is het verhaal waar?
Dat weten we NIET. De MIVD zegt niets over het werk of de bronnen. Het tv-programma Nieuwsuur en de krant de Volkskrant deden jarenlang onderzoek. Zij vonden GEEN bewijs voor het verhaal.
Kushner ontkent alles. Op X noemt hij het verhaal “volkomen krankzinnig“. Hij zegt ook: er zijn geen papieren van de bank als bewijs.
⚖️ Waarom is dit belangrijk? (Here is why)
Kushner werkte in het Witte Huis. Misschien moest hij de bankrekening melden bij de Amerikaanse overheid. Deed hij dat niet? Dan brak hij misschien de Amerikaanse wet.
In 2020 hielp Kushner bij de Abraham-akkoorden. Toen begonnen Israël en de VAE een officiële relatie. Nu werkt Kushner weer als onderhandelaar voor Trump. Het boek zorgt dus voor veel vragen. 🔍

📌 Two intelligence services: The Netherlands has TWO intelligence services. The AIVD (General Intelligence and Security Service) is the civilian service and works under the Ministry of the Interior. The MIVD is the military service and works under the Ministry of Defence. An independent committee, the CTIVD, checks if both services follow the law.
📌 The MIVD and the GRU: This is not the first time the MIVD faced Russian military spies. In April 2018 the MIVD stopped four officers of the Russian GRU (in Dutch: GROe) near the headquarters of the OPCW, the chemical weapons watchdog in The Hague. The men tried to hack the organisation’s Wi-Fi network. The Dutch government made the case public in October 2018.

What happened? There is big news about spies and an iPhone. The American journalist Matthew Cole is writing a new book. He writes that the Dutch MIVD could watch along on Jared Kushner’s phone from 2018. Kushner is the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump.

750 million dollars: The spies saw something special. Kushner logged into a bank account in Dubai. That account held 750 million dollars. The money came through a bank in Azerbaijan. Cole writes that the money came from the royal families of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). So, according to Cole, Kushner received many millions. The money was meant for political goals in the Middle East. Kushner and the president of the UAE controlled the account together. A source tells Cole: “Jared was looking for a detour.” Kushner wanted better ties between Israel and Arab countries, so the countries could trade more.
Is the story true? We do not know. The MIVD says nothing about its work or its sources. The TV programme Nieuwsuur and the newspaper de Volkskrant investigated the claim for years. They found no proof for the story. Kushner denies everything. On X he calls the story “completely insane”. He also says there are no bank papers as proof.
Why does this matter? Kushner worked in the White House. Maybe he had to report the bank account to the US government. If he did not, he may have broken US law. In 2020 Kushner helped with the Abraham Accords. Then Israel and the UAE started an official relationship. Today Kushner works as a negotiator for Trump again. So the book raises many questions.
