🇳🇱 Culturele Context (Cultural Context)
💡 Did You Know?
📌 Indonesia and the Netherlands share a long history. For more than 300 years, the Netherlands controlled large parts of the Indonesian islands, then called the Dutch East Indies. Indonesia declared independence in 1945, and the Netherlands transferred sovereignty in 1949. That is why Indonesian news appears so often in Dutch media like the NOS.
📌 Sulawesi had a Dutch name: Celebes. The original Dutch article mentions a celebeswrattenzwijn. This long word means “Sulawesi warty pig”, a wild pig that only lives on Sulawesi and nearby islands. The old name Celebes is still hidden inside the animal’s Dutch name!
📌 Words travel both ways. Dutch borrowed Indonesian words like pisang (banana), and Indonesian borrowed Dutch words like kantor (from kantoor, office) and handuk (from handdoek, towel). In Dutch cities, you also find many Indonesian restaurants serving saté and the famous rijsttafel.
📌 What is El Niño? El Niño is a weather pattern. The water in the Pacific Ocean becomes warmer than normal, and this changes the weather around the world. In Indonesia, El Niño brings less rain and higher temperatures, so forests and peatlands (wet, soft land full of old plant material) dry out and burn easily.
📌 Palm oil is in your shopping basket. Indonesia is the world’s largest producer of palm oil. You find it in cookies, chocolate spread, soap and shampoo in Dutch supermarkets. Look for the word palmolie on the ingredient list next time you shop!
📌 Tip for the Civic Integration Exam: Reading simple news helps you prepare for the inburgeringsexamen (reading and KNM parts). The NOS Jeugdjournaal explains world news in easy Dutch and is a great next step after this lesson.
✅ Antwoorden (Answer Key)
🇬🇧 Translation of the News into English
What is going on? There are big wildfires in Indonesia. There is also fire on the island of Sulawesi. On that island, there are very old cave paintings. They are now in danger, researchers say.
Very old art. The cave paintings are prehistoric. People made them a very long time ago on the walls of caves. The oldest drawing on Sulawesi is about 67,800 years old, according to research published in the scientific journal Nature. It is the oldest known art in the world. In 2017, researchers found another drawing. It shows a wild pig. According to Australian researchers, that drawing is at least 51,000 years old.
Why is there danger? The fire does not always touch the cave paintings. But the heat and the smoke are also bad. The temperature in the cave changes. Because of that, the drawings break down faster, an archaeologist told the news agency Reuters. Soot also gets onto the walls. Then you can hardly see the drawings anymore.
The fire brigade works hard. Firefighters are putting out the fire. They work day and night. A firefighter says: “We must do something fast. Otherwise, we lose a very special piece of human history.”
Why are there so many wildfires? It is very dry and warm right now. That comes from El Niño, a special kind of weather. Farmers also make fires. This way, they clear the land for farming. That is an old tradition. But now it is very dry, and the fire spreads quickly to the forest. Big palm oil companies also make fires. They want new land for their trees. That is forbidden, but nobody checks it well. The fire can last for months. Researchers hope the old drawings stay safe.
